Deer-Related Crashes on the Rise – Facts & Tips to get you through Fall.
Pennsylvania & West Virginia are known for their beautiful fall foliage, rolling & hilly terrain, popular Collegiate and Professional Sports Teams and of course – Deer. What you won’t find in this article: a debate on deer hunting or a recipe for venison. What you will find is meat: Statistics & Helpful Tips to keep you safe and covered while driving during the fall season when deer activity is at it’s highest due to the reproductive season famously called – “The Rut.”
So You’re Saying there’s a Chance?
In WV, 1 in 41 people will submit a claim for deer-caused collisions, nearly 1 in 60 chance in Pennsylvania. It seems you are bound to hit 1, or 2 or maybe 3 during your lifetime depending on where you live. Remember, that’s an average. 90% of deer are hit on 2 lane or side roads! I doubt many deer get hit on Market Street in Philadelphia.
According to a recent Penn Dot Study, deer-related crashes are once again – on the rise. In 2017 there were 4,258 accidents when hitting a deer was the single listed cause, 15 of those resulting in fatalities. Another more recent release by Penn Dot study showed closer to 5,674 deer related crashed in 2017, up from 5,468 in 2016. My guess in the two studies difference would be that the deer may have caused the crash but they then hit into another vehicle or object, sustaining more notable damage.
Regardless, deer-related crashes cause an average damage cost of $4,300 per incident! That’s a lot of jingle right before Christmas Season. To avoid hoofing the bill for this, be sure to have adequate comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance policy.
Coverages to Ask your Agent about:
Comprehensive insurance is great (if you have it) as it’s mandated on any vehicle with an Auto Loan. **If you own your car outright, you are not mandated to have this coverage but DO elect for it** Other add-ons include:
- Gap Coverage if the value of your vehicle is less than the outstanding loan balance.
- New Vehicle Replacement in case there is a total loss from a deer – we have seen it!
- last but not least…Rental Car Coverage. The last thing you want to do is have to walk to work because a deer decided to ride your hood.
